![]() ![]() Yesterday I made a post listing NES games by file size, and while that's still useful for comparing ROMs to one another, it's not super accurate. Kirby's Adventure is more than fifteen times the size of Super Mario Bros., nearly thirty times the size of Donkey Kong, and is by far the largest game on this list. (The original Famicom version debuted early in the system's life, so this small size makes a lot o sense.) The smallest game on the list came out internationally in 1993 - but it's Pac-Man so it's adapted from a game released in 1980. three-game-pack with Duck Hunt and World Class Track Meet included. Mega Man and Metal Gear are the exact same size. It makes sense though since only one sprite was swapped. Dream versions of Punch-Out are the exact same size. I'd chalk that up to the developers becoming increasingly familiar with NES hardware while the Mega Man series stopped pushing its technical boundaries.īoth the Mike Tyson's and Mr. After that, 5 and 6 reduced their file size somewhat. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Famicom carts were 32KB at launch. ![]() ![]() I wonder if that was the initial planned cart size for the Famicom. The majority of "black box" titles were clearly aiming for a 16KB file size. There are several series like that, but Ninja Gaiden II and III only differ by a single kilobyte. Ninja Gaiden II and III are nearly the exact same size. NES Open Tournament Golf is more than ten times the size of Golf, the NES launch title. World Class Track Meet takes up more space than Super Mario Bros. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom The Great Reddit List of NES File Sizes Name (Not that ROM size always correlates to cart size.) Since I couldn't find a list like this already, I decided to research one myself. Since games were designed around larger cartridges as time went on, it's unfair to judge one on a 64KB cart by what one on a 512KB cart was able to pull off. I thought I'd compile a list of NES file sizes so they could be accurately compared on a technical level. I'm compiling a new list of cartridge sizes based on the source he gave me, Bootgod (which does seem a lot more accurate), but this list still serves a valuable function comparing ROMs relative to one another, so I'm leaving it up as well. NOTE: As u/reaper_man pointed out, these file sizes include the iNES header and do not quite correlate to games' actual file size. ![]()
